BuildRight Law is a boutique law firm dedicated exclusively to construction law and commercial litigation. We work with owners, developers, general contractors, subcontractors, consultants, suppliers, architects, landlords, commercial tenants and other stakeholders across the construction and real estate industry, helping them navigate the legal issues that arise through the full lifecycle of a project.

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Associate Lawyer or Income Partner to take ownership of complex files, work directly with sophisticated clients, and operate with a high degree of independence in a fully remote environment.

Reports to: Practice Lead

Note: This is a permanent, full-time, remote position. Candidates must be able to work during Toronto-based hours.

What you will do

  1. Manage Complex Litigation Files. You will take ownership of a portfolio of construction and commercial litigation matters where you will be expected to run files independently while escalating issues appropriately.
  2. Deliver High-Quality Legal Work. You will produce work that is accurate, clear, and strategically sound and delivered with strong attention to detail and judgment. You are expected to provide advice and direction, not just issue-spotting.
  3. Work Directly With Clients. You will build trusted client relationships by translating complex issues into clear, practical advice while managing expectations on outcomes, timing, and budget. Clients should experience you as responsive, capable, and commercially aware.
  4. Collaborate With the Team. You will work closely with partner, clerks, staff, experts, and external professionals by sharing knowledge and contributing to team effectiveness. Strong communication and collaboration are essential in a remote environment. Your colleagues will feel respected, supported and valued when working with you.
  5. Take Ownership. You will be expected to prioritize and manage your workload independently. This is a high-autonomy, high-accountability role.
  6. Manage Work Efficiently. You will maintain accurate and timely time records to keep files moving without unnecessary delay. Strong commercial awareness is essential.
  7. Contribute to Practice Growth. You will support practice development by building and maintaining professional relationships. Relationship-building is part of senior-level success.
  8. Demonstrate Financial Acumen. You will docket and close your time daily. You will communicate with clients about financial matters on their files, set expectations, and proactively communicate to facilitate collecting accounts in a timely fashion.
  9. Continue to Develop Your Practice. You will develop deeper expertise in construction law and/or commercial litigation.
  10. Work Effectively Remotely. Success in this role requires:

  • Confident handling of litigation steps through all stages with minimal supervision, but consistent support and

  • Developing increasing construction/commercial litigation expertise
  • Engaging in relationship-building and practice development

What we're looking for

Required

  • Called to the Ontario Bar and in good standing
  • 6+ years post-call experience
  • Strong construction law and/or commercial litigation background
  • Excellent drafting, advocacy, and analytical skills
  • Proven ability to manage complex files independently
  • Strong organization and time management
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment

Preferred

  • Construction law or construction dispute experience
  • Experience with project, infrastructure, or claims work
  • Court, tribunal, or arbitration experience
  • Mediation and settlement experience
  • Existing industry or client relationships
  • Partial book of business or demonstrated interest in building a sustainable practice
