Description
The Federation of Law Societies of Canada is the national association of the 14 law societies mandated by the provinces and territories to regulate Canada’s legal profession in the public interest. It is the body through which Canada’s law societies collaborate at the national level, share information on trends and issues affecting the legal profession, and engage in collective action and decision-making. The Federation is also the law societies’ national and international voice on important issues related to the regulation of the profession and the rule of law.
The Federation is entering an important period of renewal. It is undertaking a comprehensive review of its governance and preparing to develop its next strategic plan, work that will help shape how the organization is structured, how it serves its member law societies, and how it responds to the opportunities and challenges ahead. The next CEO will help shape the Federation’s future direction from both a governance and strategic point of view.
Reporting to Council, the CEO will lead a respected national organization that sits at the intersection of regulation, public policy, government relations and professional leadership. The successful candidate will ensure the Federation remains an indispensable resource to its member law societies in a period defined by technological disruption, increasing regulatory complexity, evolving public expectations, and growing demands for collaboration across jurisdictions. Success in the role will require a leader who can navigate complexity, build consensus among diverse stakeholders, foster strong relationships across the country, and bring a thoughtful, forward-looking perspective to the opportunities and challenges facing Canada's legal profession.
The Federation seeks an accomplished executive who combines strategic leadership capability with exceptional relationship-building and stakeholder management skills. This individual will bring the judgment, credibility, and political acuity necessary to lead in a complex, consensus-driven environment where influence is earned through trust, collaboration, and service to members.
The successful candidate will be equally comfortable engaging with regulators, governments, boards, and legal professionals, while providing strong operational leadership to a national organization. They will be a thoughtful listener, skilled facilitator, and effective ambassador, capable of bringing diverse perspectives together around shared goals.
