Description

Articling Opportunities for the 2027-2028 Licensing Cycle

The Law Society of Ontario is pleased to participate, for the first time, in the Toronto Articling Recruit for the 2027-2028 Licensing Cycle.

Created by an act of the Legislative Assembly in 1797, the Law Society regulates, licenses, and disciplines Ontario’s lawyers and paralegals in the public interest. In fulfilling its public protection mandate, the Law Society has, among other obligations, duties to maintain and advance the cause of justice and the rule of law, and to facilitate access to justice for the people of Ontario. The Law Society is located in the historic Osgoode Hall, at 130 Queen Street West, Toronto.

In the 2027-2028 Licensing Cycle, three divisions of the Law Society will each offer one articling placement opportunity: Professional Regulation; Policy, Equity, and External Relations; and Office of General Counsel. The full term of each articling placement will be served in one division only. The individual placement deions, requirements, and contact information for each division follow below. Applications are made directly to the division at the email address provided at the bottom of the placement deion. You may apply to more than one division.

The application deadline is June 26, 2026, at 5:00 PM. Applications received after that time will not be reviewed.

To apply, please provide the documents requested below, combined into one single PDF in the following order:

  1. Cover letter (no more than one page, 12-point font, 1.5 spacing)
  2. Law school trans and NCA tran (if applicable)
  3. Resume (no more than two pages, 12-point font)
  4. Writing sample (a graded paper submitted as course work in law school or an article published by or submitted to a journal, competition or open call)

For all placements, knowledge of legal research databases and Microsoft Office suite will be considered an asset, as will be proficiency in oral and written French.

The Law Society currently operates under a distributed workforce model, with onsite, remote, and hybrid work arrangements determined by role and departmental requirements. This model is subject to change, and the work arrangement for a specific articling placement will be communicated to applicants who are offered an interview on Call Day (Friday, July 17, 2026, at 8:00 AM) by the division making the offer. The Law Society prefers to conduct interviews in-person but will consider individual requests for a remote interview by videoconference.

To apply for a placement, you must be eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the contract and reside in Ontario for the placement. Only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted. However, you may submit questions about the application process directly to a division at the email address provided in the placement deion.

All offers of employment made to successful applicants are conditional on the applicant having been awarded a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a Canadian law school (or a certificate of qualification issued by the National Committee on Accreditation) and being registered in the Lawyer Licensing Process with the Law Society of Ontario for the 2027-2028 Licensing Cycle.

Law Society of Ontario articling placements are a full-time contract position with a term running from August 2027 to June 2028. The start date for the position is somewhat flexible but will begin no later than August 9, 2027.  Compensation for Law Society of Ontario articling placements is $5,833 per month (equivalent to $70,000 annually) and full reimbursement of licensing fees. Articling students employed by the Law Society of Ontario are provided access to the Employee and Family Assistance Plan (EFAP).

The three articling placements with Professional Regulation, Policy, Equity, and External Relations, and Office of General Counsel are existing positions. The Law Society of Ontario does not use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to screen, assess, or select applicants during the hiring process at present.

The Law Society of Ontario is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from persons representing the diversity of our community. We are committed to creating an accessible, barrier-free, and inclusive workplace and are committed to continuing compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). If you are unable to apply to this position due to the requirement for an accommodation of any kind, please contact the division you wish to apply to at the email address provided for the division.

Professional Regulation (Litigation Services)

The Law Society of Ontario offers a unique and rewarding articling opportunity within its Policy, Equity and External Relations (PEER) division. This role is ideal for a student who is intellectually curious, policy-minded, and eager to contribute to work that shapes the legal profession in Ontario. As an articling student, you will work closely with the Director and Strategic Policy Counsel on high impact initiatives that advance regulatory policy, equity, and engagement with the profession. You will gain hands-on experience supporting the development of programs and policy options that influence how law is practised and regulated. Your work will include conducting legal and policy research, preparing research memoranda and reports, drafting model policies for the legal profession, and participating in meetings with lawyers, benchers, and other key stakeholders of the Law Society. This role offers meaningful exposure to public-interest law, legal regulation, and professional governance in a collaborative and collegial environment.

During the 2027-2028 articling placement the student will assist the General Counsel and her Counsel with legal research, writing legal memoranda, reviewing & drafting contracts, drafting executive legislation (by-laws), disclosures, client meetings, and advisory work.
