The role:
We are a successful, innovative and team-oriented law firm seeking an experienced Tax Partner for our downtown Toronto or Calgary office. This role will lead our Tax team alongside our other Tax Partners. Essential Responsibilities:
- Advanced technical tax expertise and strong client relationship management skills.
- Experience in comprehensive tax planning and compliance services for complex ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals.
- Proven track record of building and maintaining strong long-lasting relationships with UHNW clients, which includes understanding their needs, and providing exceptional high touch service.
- Vast experience developing and implementing tailored, sophisticated tax strategies to minimize liabilities and optimize financial outcomes for clients.
- Deep knowledge of developing, and executing on advanced tax strategies for individuals, trusts and estates, focusing on wealth preservation and tax minimization.
- Ability to lead, mentor and manage a team of tax professionals, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment while mentoring junior lawyers.
- Experience overseeing the preparation and review of complex tax files.
- Experience with advising and serving clients on tax-efficient strategies, which include but are not limited to the sale of businesses, intergenerational wealth transfers, division of matrimonial property in divorces, estate and terminal tax issues, inbound and outbound financing, private equity and hedge fund formation, and emigrating from Canada.
- Experience supporting clients in launching new ventures, advising on optimal business structures and long-term tax strategies.
- Experience bringing practical solution-based approaches to client mandates by delivering thoughtful guidance at the intersection of tax, corporate law and private capital.
Qualifications / Demonstrated Skills:
- A minimum of 8-10 years experience in tax-planning.
- A Master’s degree in Taxation, the CPA In-Depth Tax Course, or similar equivalent.
- CPA and/or TEP designations considered an asset.
- Ability to work well under pressure, meet unexpected and sometimes competing deadlines, and exhibit sound judgment.
- Strong analytical and communication skills.
