What we do

The rule of law and access to justice are essential and are not merely a domestic concern. They are central to international stability and security. Strong legal systems abroad support human rights, democratic governance and economic development. These outcomes matter to Canadians in an interconnected world.

The Canadian Bar Association works internationally to promote the rule of law and help build the values essential to justice. The CBA mobilizes Canadian legal expertise to strengthen justice systems worldwide. Through partnerships with local institutions, governments and donors, we help build legal capacity in access to justice and legal aid, support the independence of the bench and bar, and improve the administration of justice. This work is grounded in collaboration and respect for local context.

Our influence

For over 30 years, CBA members have contributed their time and expertise to projects across Asia, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean, building long-lasting relationships that support locally driven legal reform.

We focus on five strategic priorities.

  • Strengthening legal institutions and the legal profession
  • Building legal trade capacity
  • Improving access to justice through legal aid and public awareness programs
  • Supporting rights advocacy and policy reform
  • Improving the administration of justice

Our impact

Our international projects draw on the expertise of our members and institutional partners in Canada and abroad, who provide on-the-ground training, mentorship, technical advice, and educational tools. Some examples of our work:

  • East Africa: Economic empowerment for communities affected by extractive industries;
  • Tunisia: Constitutional rights advocacy in partnership with the International Development Law Organisation;
  • Vietnam: Policy development and gender equality;
  • Jamaica: Justice system reform;
  • Mongolia: Engagement with local bar on responses to gender-based violence.

The CBA continues to expand its international engagement to meet today's rule-of-law challenges.
