About the Millwright Regional Council
The Millwright Regional Council represents highly skilled millwrights working across the construction, industrial, manufacturing, and energy sectors throughout Canada. The organization works with contractors, owners, and industry partners to support major infrastructure, energy, and industrial projects while promoting training, safety, and workforce development across the country.
The Council operates in multiple provinces including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, and plays a key role in labour relations, workforce mobility, jurisdictional matters, and industry development.
The Role
The Legal Counsel will play a central role in labour relations and employment matters across multiple provinces. The successful candidate will manage labour relations files, support collective bargaining, handle grievances and arbitration matters, and assist with jurisdictional disputes within the construction industry.
This role involves working closely with leadership, business representatives, contractors, and external legal counsel across Canada.
Position Responsibilities
Labour Relations & Collective Agreements
- Provide legal advice on labour relations and collective agreement administration
- Manage grievances, arbitrations, and labour board proceedings
- Provide support and advice related to collective bargaining (industrial focus)
Jurisdictional Disputes & Construction Labour Matters
- Work on jurisdictional disputes within the construction industry
- Prepare evidence and advance the organization’s position before labour boards and arbitration tribunals
- Support strategies related to scope-of-work and trade jurisdiction matters
Legal Advisory & Organizational Support
- Draft and negotiate contracts, agreements, and internal policies
- Work directly with leadership on organizing initiatives and employer-related matters
- Coordinate with external legal counsel across provinces on jurisdiction-specific matters
- Exercise judgment in advancing files and making recommendations on labour and dispute matters
- Engage with representatives, contractors, and project teams to support labour relations and jurisdictional matters
Occasional travel within Canada may be required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (or eligible for admission)
- Experience or strong interest in labour & employment law
- Interest in unionized environments and collective bargaining
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong judgment, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple matters
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of files
- Exposure to construction, industrial, or manufacturing sectors is considered an asset
