Minken Employment Lawyers (Est. 1990) is a specialty employment law boutique that provides expert legal services on a full range of workplace issues to employees, employers, including law firms, corporate counsel and human resource departments in a variety of industries. With over 36 years of experience we have developed insightful, comprehensive and practical strategies for winning client cases, regardless of which side we represent.
We are seeking a recent call to the Ontario Bar to join us. This position is a great opportunity to expand legal knowledge and practice skills in the area of employment law by working alongside our experienced lawyers. Strong emphasis is placed on client care, business development and building a client base to ensure continuous and organic growth of the practice.
The responsibilities include but not limited to assisting senior lawyers with various aspects of employment law files; carriage of select files from beginning to end under supervision of senior lawyers; preparing correspondence and documentation associated with each stage of negotiation and litigation; communicating with clients, opposing counsel and other parties involved in the course of the file; meticulous docketing; attending Courts and Hearings, Settlement Conferences & Mediations; writing articles and blogs for the firm’s website and publications; participating in business development events including speaking a conferences.
Some of the attributes and factors considered in the firm’s selection of a successful candidate are:
- LSO member in good standing;
- Demonstrated keen interest in Employment Law;
- Ability to work well as a part of the team or independently on projects assigned and client files;
- Time/practice management, communication and client service experience;
- Demonstrated high value placed on business development opportunities with the view of developing a solid practice within the firm by showing initiative and active participation in business development efforts (firm blog, video, social media contribution and other business development and networking activities). Proven record of strong networking abilities, online/social media and other business development skills will be given special consideration;
- Memberships in legal, business, community support organizations and associations;
- Thorough knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and other legislation associated with the area of practice, strong research skills using online resources;
- Experience in drafting correspondence, pleadings, Mediation Briefs, Motion materials, etc. (please provide writing samples) and have at least completed articles in Employment Law and or Litigation (Court, Hearings, Mediation and Employment Law experience is an asset);
- Knowledge and proficiency with technology, including time/record keeping, legal practice management and accounting software.
