Immigration Program Lawyer

Description

The role is a full-time position practicing exclusively in immigration and refugee law.  The Immigration Program Lawyer reports directly to the Managing Counsel, and works closely with the Immigration Advocate, the Immigration Legal Assistant, and with CLG’s Students-At-Law.  The Immigration Lawyer is also a member of the organization’s Legal Team and therefore works with other lawyers in different areas of practice to ensure a coordinated service delivery model when required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Maintaining files as assigned by the Managing Counsel in relation to all legal advice given, including client consultation, research, drafting submissions, preparing court documents, and appearing in court/hearings as necessary.
• Assisting the Managing Counsel on more complex matters or files.
• Working directly with refugee claimants in Canada to assist them with completing their refugee claim (Basis of Claim Forms, narrative and/or IRCC Portal) and/or providing other services as assigned by the managing Counsel.
• Assisting walk-in and agency-referred clients to determine clients’ needs, provide legal advice/information and/or referrals to other CLG Programs or outside agencies.
• Providing mentorship and supervision to the Immigration Advocate, Immigration Legal Assistant and students who may be assigned to work on matters in the Program.
• Maintaining accurate notes using CLG’s record management system and approved reporting practices.
• Assisting with managing, updating and retrieving data for outcomes reporting.
• Attending various meetings and workshops as a representative of CLG as required.
• Providing public legal education at workshops and information sessions as required.
• Assisting in updating/assembling educational/training material for internal use, clients, volunteer lawyers and Outreach Clinics as required.
• Remaining current on the unique needs of immigrants in relation to the legal system.
