Legal Counsel (In‑House)
Hamilton, ON | Full‑Time | Hybrid optional
HOPA Ports is seeking an in‑house Legal Counsel to join our Senior Leadership Team to provide practical legal support on contracts and real estate, business strategy, regulatory compliance, risk management and corporate governance.
This role is ideal for a lawyer with experience as in-house counsel, or who may be looking to transition from private practice to an in‑house role.
Key Responsibilities
As Legal Counsel, you will:
- Advise on strategic commercial transactions; draft, review, and negotiate contracts, including commercial agreements, leases, service agreements, and MOUs
- Advise on regulatory, compliance, and risk management matters; work with HOPA and industry colleagues to develop expertise on Canada Port Authority legislation and issues
- Coordinate with external legal counsel on litigation and disputes as required
- Support corporate governance activities, including working with senior leadership and the Board of Directors
- Identify legal risks and contribute to mitigation strategies across the organization
Required Qualifications
- LL.B. or J.D. from a recognized institution
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Approximately 5+ years of legal experience (private practice or in‑house) in commercial/corporate law
- Strong communication, judgment, and problem‑solving skills
