The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division, is seeking an experienced, dynamic and creative leader for the position of Crown Attorney in the Manitoulin Crown Attorney's Office in the North Region.

About the job

Duties will include:

  • Leadership and supervisory responsibility for the efficient and timely prosecution of all cases in the Ontario Court of Justice, Superior Court of Justice, Ontario Review Board and at Coroner's Inquests
  • Provide legal advice on criminal issues to the police, related agencies, and other members of the criminal justice system
  • Provide ongoing leadership and managing staff (Assistant Crown Attorneys and Business Professional staff) including development of work plans, priorities and schedules, coaching, mentoring and training to ensure effective resource utilization, flexibility, and accountability of criminal and quasi-criminal matters
  • Requirement to oversee operations in the Ontario Court of Justice [Criminal, Youth Court, Provincial Offences Court, Bail Court, including Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court in Gore Bay, Little Current and Wikwemikong] and the Superior Court of Justice
  • Lead and manage the development and implementation of operational and organizational changes, best practice standards such as case management, and scheduling to maximize efficiencies
  • Establish, develop and maintain effective professional relationships and work co-operatively with all members of the Criminal Law Division (management, colleagues and support staff) and other participants in the justice system for the purpose of enhancing communication between the parties and improving the administration of justice
  • Management of financial, administrative and human resource matters and processes in the Crown's office in accordance with relevant Ministry/Divisional/Regional policies and procedures
  • Develop and maintain technical skills to be able to communicate, work effectively and provide leadership within the office and within the Criminal Law Division with respect to computer technology
  • Represent the Crown's office/region/ministry on various multi-stakeholder committees, task forces, community forums and steering committees
  • Promote a program of public service that supports the Ministry's business plan and the Division's operational plan

Mandatory requirements

  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Valid Ontario Class 'G' Driver's license

Leadership Skills

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in order to effectively lead a Crown Attorney's office
  • Proven ability to work in a positive and collaborative way with Indigenous partners and communities to enhance access to justice and address overrepresentation of Indigenous persons in the justice system
  • Demonstrated management and administrative skills to manage staff, set work priorities and standards, evaluate performance and manage employee relations issues
  • Demonstrated strategic, operational and business planning skills with ability to deliver effective and efficient results
  • Demonstrated judgement skills in evaluating and providing strategic and legal advice on criminal prosecutions
  • Demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive work environment with employees and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated legal skills in criminal law practice and procedure and the ability to identify and implement best practices and effectively lead staff in a change environment

Program Management Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of law, statutes and case law relating to the prosecution of criminal and quasi-criminal offences at all levels
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ministry's business plan and the Division's strategic and operational plan, policies and priorities
  • Ability to monitor and develop internal case management processes to support the efficient prosecution of criminal matters, e.g. screening, disclosure, resolution meetings
  • Ability to monitor and develop internal processes to appropriately identify and safeguard victim's interests as they arise
  • Proven ability to work with computer driven technology (e.g. SCOPE) within the  Division
  • Proven advocacy and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skill
  • Proven sound judgment, integrity and problem-solving abilities
  • Proven ability to work with Justice Community Partners
  • Knowledge of financial and human resource practices and procedures

Essential abilities and skills

  • Ability and willingness to travel to various locations within the North Region and/or Province.
  • Work effectively with current and emerging technology, as required, to deliver prosecution services and assist in the modernization of the division.

  • prosecutes all offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and the most serious offences under the Provincial Offences Act (Part 3 only), in Ontario's 49 judicial districts
  • represents the Crown in criminal appeals at all levels of Court (the Superior Court of Justice, the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada), as well as provides specialized services in relation to applications for wiretap authorizations (as designated under Part 6 of the Criminal Code of Canada), extraditions and search warrants
  • provides specialized legal advice in all areas of criminal law to the police, the Attorney General, and the Deputy Attorney General
  • examines and establishes policy guidelines for the conduct of prosecutions within the Province of Ontario
  • provides world-class education to its prosecutors and prosecutors from across Canada and the United States
