Professional qualifications

  • Ontario criminal courtroom experience;

  • ability to identify legal, evidentiary and procedural issues;

  • ownership of assigned matters and reliable attendance;

  • excellent calendaring and file-management practices; and

  • independent work with appropriate consultation or escalation.

Kooh Law Professional Corporation is seeking Ontario criminal defence counsel to join its Toronto criminal practice on a contract basis. Depending on experience, assigned work may include OCJ appearances, disclosure review, bail, Crown resolution discussions, JPTs, pleas, sentencing, Charter issues, impaired driving and domestic matters, trial preparation, trials, Legal Aid and private-retainer matters.

The successful lawyer should assume responsibility for appropriate files, communicate effectively with clients and justice-system participants, identify legal and evidentiary issues efficiently, and maintain disciplined control over appearances, deadlines and next steps.

The role is primarily based at Kooh Law's office at 120 Adelaide Street West, Toronto, subject to court and professional requirements. Kooh Law operates a digitally integrated practice using Clio, Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint/OneDrive, electronic disclosure and filing systems. Demonstrated technology fluency and disciplined electronic file management are important.

Candidates must be licensed and in good standing with the LSO. Ontario criminal courtroom experience is required. LAO criminal roster status is an asset. There is no requirement to bring a book of business. Compensation is structured on a contract-counsel basis by reference to professional fees collected on assigned matters. Detailed terms will be discussed confidentially with shortlisted candidates.
