Each year at its annual general meeting the Canadian Bar Association honors members of the legal profession whose contributions to the Association, the legal profession and the justice system mark them out as deserving of special recognition.
This year’s awards were presented during the CBA’s first-ever all-virtual AGM.
Here are this year’s honorees:
President’s Award
CBA President Brad Regehr chose two honorees for this year’s President’s Award:
- John Borrows, the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Law at the University of Victoria Law School, who is known for his trailblazing work in the field of Indigenous law;
- Aimée Craft, an associate professor at the University of Ottawa who recognized internationally as a leader in the areas of Indigenous laws, treaties and water.
Louis St-Laurent Award of Excellence
The CBA’s highest award recognizes a lifetime of outstanding service. This year’s honoree is Thomas Ullyett, a career public service lawyer, recognized for being a community-builder who helped to support a generation of Yukon public sector lawyers and lawyers in the North.
Douglas Miller Rising Star Award
Pam Hrick, an associate at Stockwoods Barristers in Toronto who has established herself as a force in the litigation scene since being called to the bar in 2015. She has held a variety of leadership positions within the CBA.
Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Law
Albert Oosterhoff is a leading thinker in the field of trusts and estates law whose texts are used in Canadian law schools and whose writings have been cited in hundreds court cases across the country.
Touchstone Award
Dr. Laverne Jacobs, Associate Dean at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law, has dedicated her career to teaching, researching and writing about law and disability, administrative law, and human rights. She is the founder and director of The Law, Disability and Social Change Project, a research and public policy initiative at the University of Windsor.
