Dear Section Members,
We are starting off 2017 with much excitement! There continues to be a lot going on in the pension landscape across Canada. And the CBA’s National Pensions & Benefits Law Section is right in the thick of it! Check out our website and find out who’s on the 2016-2017 executive.
Our Executive Committee includes lawyers practicing in pensions and benefits from coast to coast, be that in a law firm, in-house or in an actuarial consulting firm. We meet regularly to discuss the latest developments in the law, organize professional development, and publish articles.
We have established strong working relationships and meet regularly with governments and regulators such as Finance Canada, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the Canadian Association of Pension Supervisory Authorities (CAPSA) and the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), to discuss policy and administrative issues. We are frequently consulted by provincial and federal governments to provide advice on draft legislation, even before it is tabled in the legislature. Since our Section was founded in 2006, we have prepared more than 50 submissions to governments and regulators.
In collaboration with the American Bar Association (ABA) and the International Pension and Employee Benefits Lawyers Association (IPEBLA), we will be co-hosting a joint conference in Boston in June 2018. Mark your calendars!
As a member of our Section, you benefit from having access to the latest resources, including recent articles, new legal developments in pensions and benefits law and legal health checks such as Your Retirement Income. Also, check out our Recent Submissions:
Pension Investment in Canada — 30% Rule
Saskatchewan Negotiated Cost Pension Plan Consultation
CAPSA Consultation on the Revisions to the Pension Plan Governance Guideline
All members are welcome to join our CBA Pensions and Benefits Law Section LinkedIn group.
We are always looking for enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers for our committees, special projects and activities. Please contact Inika Anderson to join a committee or get involved.
Hope you will participate in our many activities!
