WHEREAS Canada is a party to the UN Convention against Torture, the four Geneva Conventions on humanitarian law, the Convention against Genocide, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Statute of the International Criminal Court

The CBA says Bill C-44 undermines established practices that balance national security against fundamental rights. The proposed amendments reduce protections against disclosure of information that may identify confidential informants.

The CBA supports efforts to raise global standards for transparency in the extractive sector, however, urges harmonization of the reporting requirements with the Unites States and European Union regimes.

The CBA addresses several issues to update the Canada Business Corporations Act as part of Industry Canada’s consultations, and urges a comprehensive review of the legislation every five years.

WHEREAS the Second Fundamental Principle of Olympism states that the goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity

The CBA voices concerns with Ministerial Direction permitting CSIS to share information derived from torture or other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or that may expose a person to torture or mistreatment.

WHEREAS the Ministerial Direction to CSIS on Information Sharing With Foreign Entities (the Direction) permits, in limited circumstances at the discretion of the CSIS Director, sharing information that may be derived from or put persons at risk of torture or other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (mistreatment)

WHEREAS the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (Hague Convention on Apostilles) replaces the existing and cumbersome process of legalizing documents with a simpler process of apostilles
