Welcome to a new year for this Section! As Chair, I invite you to get involved in the many exciting initiatives and programs we have planned for the coming months. We’ve highlighted below some key events, reminders and initiatives for you to keep your eye on, and we will provide you with more details soon on each.
We also encourage you to spread the word about our Section to students, new practitioners entering the profession, your colleagues and your peers. Our Section is strong because of its membership, and we want to ensure our resources and programs reach as broad a group as possible.
UPDATE ON DOJ DAY – STAY TUNED!
We are excited to announce that early in the New Year, members of the CBA Environmental, Energy and Resources Law Section and their Justice counterparts will once again dialogue, virtually, about key environment and energy topics, with a retrospective of 30 years of environmental law evolution in Canada. This program is FREE for CBA members and Justice Canada personnel. Get your CPD hours and gain valuable and topical information you can implement in your practice.
Stay tuned for an update on the date.
2023 SUMMIT – SAVE THE DATE: MAY 5-6, 2023
The Section is pleased to announce that our signature Summit will be returning in-person in Ottawa in 2023. Follow our event website for updates on the agenda and registration details.
MEMBER ARTICLES – PUBLICATIONS
We value your insights and contributions! We encourage you to consider submitting your articles, blog posts or publications for posting/re-posting on our Eco-Bulletin. If you have an article you wish to post, please send them to CBANEERLS@cba.org. We are looking for topical resources to be able to share with our Members.
GOWLING WLG – DAVID ESTRIN PRIZE ESSAY CONTEST
The Section administers an annual essay contest to promote and reward interest in environmental, energy and resources law topics in Canadian law schools. Each year we receive submissions from students across Canada who are competing for a monetary prize of $1,000 plus paid registration, airfare and accommodation for the annual Summit. Criteria and eligibility parameters are set out on the section’s website, along with submission guidelines. Deadline for submissions is May 2, 2023.
The Gowling WLG-David Estrin Prize winner for 2022 was Francis Miltimore (University of Victoria), with the excellent entry, “Whose Boat is it Anyway? The Pitfalls and Jurisdictional Complications of the Canadian Problem Boat Regime”.
DON’T FALL BEHIND ON YOUR PD – WE WANT YOUR INPUT!
Get CLE hours with webinars – Purchase live and on-demand law series webinars. You can also search webinars by series to pick the best programs that meet your needs.
We encourage you to send us your suggestions for PD – what topics would be most impactful for your practice? If you have suggestions or feedback for PD programs and webinars, please send those to our attention as soon as possible. Our Executive is working hard to bring you valuable programming in 2023.
WANT TO GET MORE INVOLVED?
The Section has several active committees, and we are thrilled to welcome participation from members who would like to contribute to the work of the Section. Contact us to get involved!
Sincerely,
Mohammad Ali Raza,
