The Section serves as the national voice on the law governing corporate entities and includes securities regulation, commercial law and consumer law. As Chair, I am writing to provide you with a brief summary of our activities to date and provide you with upcoming events that may be of interest to you. We encourage you to get involved with our Section activities.
Law reform initiatives
Our Section has continued to participate in meetings and constructive dialogue with respect to law reform initiatives that may impact your corporate/commercial clients. To date, members of the executive have volunteered to represent our Section on the following projects:
The Langlois prize – law student essay contest
This year marks the inaugural year of the law essay contest, The Langlois Prize. Langlois Lawyers sponsored both the English and French contests related to general topics in Canadian business law.
I am pleased to announce our winners, Christine Chaussé for her essay on “Rémunération des dirigeants - efficience des mécanismes de contrôle" (paper only available in French), and Beverly Chung for her essay on “Marketing an Unmarketable Product”.
Webinars
On April 11, our Section hosted a webinar, “Recreational Cannabis Business in Canada: Legal Practice Points”. We were pleased to gather volunteers to speak to and inform a national audience on various practice points unique to this newly legalized industry. My personal thanks go to our moderator, David Demirkan (Ottawa), and to our speakers, Matt Anderson (Edmonton), Pascal Archambault (Montreal), Eric Foster (Toronto) and Maya Stano (Vancouver).
Keep an eye out for for the webinars on September 12 “Selected Legislative and Regulatory Developments Affecting the Insurance and Reinsurance Industry” and upcoming webinar on November 21, 2019 entitled, “Current Practice Trends in Canadian Private M&A”. Practice points with respect to M&A deals will be discussed and we encourage you to register.
Get involved
The success of the Section comes from the dedication of our executive, our volunteers and our members. The Section has formed a Strategic Initiative Committee to focus on improving member engagement and delivering current and practical knowledge of national application. This committee will be meeting to form a strategy plan to articulate the value proposition of our Section and then develop tactics to deliver relevant and beneficial programs to its members.
We invite you to engage with the Section and this Strategic Initiative Committee in the following ways:
- Email your ideas for new activities or initiatives that you would like to see from the Section
- Submit a member article (now open access!)
- Join us to contribute to our submissions
Don’t hesitate to get involved!
Regards,
Tommy Tremblay
