What Do We Want? Canada’s Future Legal Aid System: Backgrounder on National Legal Aid Benchmarks

In spring 2015, a Working Group of the Canadian Bar Association’s Access to Justice Committee (CBA Committee) and the Association of Legal Aid Plans of Canada (ALAP) initiated the National Legal Aid Benchmarks project. The project is intended to start a different type of conversation and encourage new ways of thinking about legal aid reform, to build support for and encourage substantial change.

It was on April 17, 1982, that Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau signed the Charter, thereby guaranteeing fundamental rights and freedoms for all Canadians. In honour of this milestone, the Canadian Bar Association introduced Law Day in 1983 as a means to commemorate the event and educate the public about the legal system.
