On June 17, Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould announced the appointments of a total of 15 judges to courts in Alberta (six), Ontario (five), British Columbia (two) and Quebec (one), as well as one appointment to the Federal Court of Appeal, to replace a judge who had resigned in May.
CBA President Janet Fuhrer released this statement:
We are delighted that the government has started to fill the vacancies on the courts. The unfilled vacancies have created some delays and other problems for Canadians seeking justice. While we all wish for vacancies to be filled expeditiously, we understand that revamping the process will take time and appreciate the Government’s efforts to do things right. We are in communication with government officials and the Minister’s office and fully expect an ongoing dialogue on how best to fill vacancies and appoint a judiciary that is reflective of Canadian society.
The list of appointments can be found on the Justice Department website.
