In the Interests of Children — Response to Bill C-560

The CBA reiterates its stance to retain the “best interests of the child” test for custody and access, and opposes private member’s Bill C-560 that would impose equal parenting time for children.

Bill C-24 — Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act

The CBA supports clarifying the test for Canadian residency and commends restoring citizenship to “lost Canadians.” However, we recommend significant changes to other aspects of Bill C-24 on granting and revoking Canadian citizenship.

International Youth Internship Program (IYIP)

The CBA supports the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), as young lawyers have benefitted from its funding and the Young Lawyers Internship Program. The CBA requests that the Government renew and continue funding for IYIP.

The CBA says plans to prohibit cross-border price discrimination through the Competition Act would make the Competition Bureau a “price regular” and could backfire by chilling cross-border trade. The Bureau should promote open and fair competition.

Bill C-9 — First Nations' Elections Act

While the CBA finds the goals of the First Nations’ Elections Act (Bill C-9) laudable, it must not interfere with First Nations’ constitutional right to determine their own systems of internal government. We suggest amendments to the Bill.
