The Canadian Bar Association is saddened by the passing of Gordon Proudfoot, on May 1, 2020. He served the Canadian legal profession, his province and our Association with passion and commitment during his long career.

OTTAWA – The Canadian Bar Association’s Fellowship Committee has selected Léa Brière-Godbout to receive the 2020-2021 Viscount Bennett Fellowship for her graduate legal studies.

OTTAWA – The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted limitations in the ability of legal and justice systems to deliver their services when circumstances force them to slow down or close.  Many proceedings before courts and administrative tribunals have been suspended, for example, adding to already significant backlogs.

Today is Law Day – marking the 38th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the repatriation of the Canadian Constitution. It is an occasion for the public to learn about the law, the legal profession and the legal institutions that form the cornerstones of Canadian democracy.

‘When you know better, you can do better’ is the CBA’s philosophy in responding to the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

In response to the health and travel concerns related to COVID-19, the CBA International Initiatives team mobilized quickly. As of March 20, 2020, all 30 Young Lawyers International Program interns placed overseas, and needing to return to Canada, have been repatriated.
