Did you know that ADR’s William Holder was a professional tour caddy? That Health Law member-at-large Kim Jakeman is a professional Crossfit athlete? Or that Pensions and Benefits Chair Sonia Mak is a passionate dancer who does ballroom dancing and contemporary line dancing four times a week?

Access to justice is a key and ongoing priority for the Canadian Bar Association, so that was our primary focus when looking at this year’s federal budget.

Being a CBA Board Member has been an invaluable and unforgettable journey for me.  However, this role comes with much responsibility and reading, yes lots of reading. In my first year on the Board I was a part of the Equality Sub-committee, and I found being on that committee was fulfilling but it required work and participation from everyone involved.

CBA activities this year have put a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a PD session coming up next month.

In recognition of her dedication to raising awareness on mental health and wellness issues throughout her legal career, the CBA is awarding Madam Justice Michele H. Hollins, Q.C. the 2019 CBA Wellness Subcommittee Award of Excellence.

The CBA has a long tradition of working for a fair, formal process for the appointment of judges in Canada. The integrity of that process is critical, to ensure public confidence in the courts.

As we debate the merits of opening the legal profession to non-lawyers, the experience with immigration consultants offers a case study of the perils and pitfalls that can lie ahead.
