Women from Manitoba have been named this year’s recipients of the Hero and Ally awards presented by the CBA’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Community.

Each year the CBA presents a number of awards recognizing CBA members for their outstanding work. It’s time to turn your thoughts to who the next flight of recipients should be. Here is a list of the awards and their descriptions:

The new CBA President takes office on September 1 of every year, but this year the changing of the executive marks a couple of significant firsts: he’s the first Indigenous president in the Association’s 124-year history. As well, the ceremony surrounding the transfer of the chain of office – on Sept. 10, 2020 – will be virtual for the first time, due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel and gathering.

August 1 is Emancipation Day –a day to reflect on the history of slavery in Canada and its continuing effects in our own time. On this date 186 years ago, the Slavery Abolition Act, an Act of British Parliament, came into effect officially abolishing slavery in most of the British Empire including Canada.

The ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic on the legal profession appear to have landed disproportionately on law students and young lawyers. Anecdotally, first jobs, articling positions and summer jobs have evaporated. Those who have secured positions are working remotely – losing some of the invaluable informal learning that typically comes with working in a law office.

When you pivot, you stop in your tracks, and turn without lifting your foot as your momentum takes you in a new direction relatively seamlessly. It’s a skill we usually associate with athletes, particularly basketball players, the best of whom keep their eyes on not just the ball, but the flow of the game – and change their own direction accordingly.

As a lawyer, you understand how important it is to innovate, stay on top of changes to the practice of law, and navigate challenges to prepare for the future.
