Dear members,
Happy New Year 2018! We are excited to share with you the meetings, travels, new projects and initiatives undertaken by the CBA Young Lawyers Section over the past few months and in the year to come.
To start, two of our Section Officers are soaring to new heights! Our Young Lawyers’ Vice-Chair, Vivene Salmon, was recently acclaimed CBA Vice-President for the 2018-2019 year. In addition, our former Past 2016-2017 Young Lawyers Chair, the Hon. Jordan Brown, was appointed the Minister of Education, Early Learning and Culture in the Prince Edward Island Legislature in October 2017, and just this month, added additional portfolios as Minister of Justice, Public Safety and Attorney General. We wish a big congratulations to them both.
Our current Chair has been busy. From September 30 – October 3, 2017, Preston Parsons had the honour and privilege of attending International Weekend and the Opening of the Courts in London, UK, along with Kerry Simmons, Q.C., CBA President. Together, they made up the Canadian contingent in London for those few days. Read more about Preston’s experience and check out the Section galleries page for some highlights.
We also have a number of items on our wish list for the New Year. During our Executive Committee meeting in Toronto on October 27-28, 2017, we set a list of priorities and initiatives important to young lawyers, from PD content, and more useful member benefits for young lawyers, to advocacy regarding the issues surrounding articling positions and student loan forgiveness projects. In these discussions, we were joined by CBA representatives from all over the country (British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Northwest Territories). We were also privileged to welcome Dana Hrelic, Chair of the ABA Young Lawyers Division, and Wiebe de Vries, President of the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA) to our discussions.
Are you interested in working with us on advancing a particular initiative? Let us know and join a committee or working group:
