Spring forward with WLF

  • May 11, 2023

Welcome to spring! Wherever you are in Canada, we hope the days are warming up! We are excited about our spring activities, including our upcoming book club, and our webinar on the intersectional impacts of climate change.

We are also looking ahead to this fall, when our biennial conference will be back in person. Save the date: November 2-3, 2023!

The WLF branch sections are keeping busy holding events to serve their local communities. Follow us on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter to see what’s happening across the country. Get involved in our initiatives below!

The Path

The Path: Your Journey Through Indigenous Canada is an in-depth online program about the history of Indigenous Canada, the ongoing impacts of colonialism, and the law on Indigenous rights. A new module on “Indigenous Peoples and the Criminal Legal System” has recently been added. This program offers so much more than CPD: it is also an opportunity for us to play our part in advancing reconciliation. We highly recommend that all Canadian lawyers explore The Path.

Madam Justice

The Madam Justice Project – named one of the Best Innovative Projects of 2022 by the Clawbies – continues to feature judges from across Canada. Learn more about the Honourable J. Michal Fairburn, Associate Chief Justice of Ontario; the Honourable Carole Hallée of the Superior Court of Québec; the Honourable Kathleen Linton of the Provincial Court of Alberta; and many more exceptional judges.

WLF is currently considering a more inclusive name for this Project to best reflect the diversity of Canadian judges, and to advance the use of gender-neutral judicial honorifics – please reach out to us with your ideas!

For more on gender-neutral forms of address, check out the Gender Neutral Terminology Guide (prepared by the CBA Nova Scotia Branch) and the resources listed there.

2023 WLF National Conference – SAVE THE DATE: November 2-3, 2023

Returning this year, the 2023 WLF Conference will take place at the OBA Conference Centre in Toronto, November 2-3, 2023. This year’s theme will explore the evolving identities of lawyers in a changing world. Please stay tuned for the full agenda and registration details!
