Ruben Perez is the current Section Chair. Ruben is completing his articling at the Toronto District School Board. Ruben is passionate about student advocacy and addressing the challenges facing law students and articling students. Ruben’s goal for this year is to create a stronger and more vibrant Section to ensure that students from all over Canada have a stronger voice through the CBA.

Marina Kwak is the Vice-Chair on the Executive. Marina is completing her articling, and she is looking forward to getting more involved and working on our initiatives.

Nancy Bediako is the Secretary on the national Executive and the Chair for the Ontario Bar Association Student Section. Nancy would like to raise awareness about the inclusion of National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) students at the CBA as the NCA process is very isolating. Additionally, Nancy is interested in promoting mental health services and resources for law students.

Yana Konakh is the Past Chair of the Section. She is an associate at Boughton Law Corporation in Vancouver. Yana assists public and private companies with a wide range of corporate, commercial and transactional matters, including financings, public offerings, private placements, stock exchange listings, mergers and acquisitions and corporate reorganizations. Yana’s goal for this term is to continue encouraging law students to get involved with the CBA early, as the CBA provides excellent training, mentorship opportunities and a sense of community.

THE HIDDEN SIDE OF AI: WHAT PUBLIC SECTOR LAWYERS NEED TO KNOW – FEBRUARY 28, 2024
Governments at all levels are increasingly using or regulating artificial intelligence (AI) systems which impact and affect the rights and interests of citizens, particularly with the rise of generative AI.
This panel discussion will explore key legal and ethical issues of AI for public sector lawyers, including privacy, intellectual property, bias, accountability, transparency, and public interest. It will also highlight recent developments and challenges in the Canadian and global AI lawmaking landscape, and their implications for public sector entities.
The panel will draw on the expertise and insights of lawyers who have experience advising on AI matters in the public sector, as well as the perspectives of AI researchers and practitioners who can explain how AI works and what it can and cannot do.
