Welcome to 2023-2024

Amy MacAlpine

Welcome to our Section. I’m honoured to be your chair for the upcoming term. I would like to thank the past chair, Krista James for her dedication to our Section and for all her support in passing the torch to me. I am excited to continue building on the Section’s work and look forward to what we can accomplish together.

We are planning several CPD programs for 2024. Programming is a critical element to the Section being active and relevant, and I look forward to supporting this goal. Stay tuned for more details!

We continue to monitor and track legislative changes in elder law issues. This includes our involvement with the CBA End of Life Working Group and developments in medical assistance in dying. We are also actively involved with pursing a CBA Resolution in the coming year, regarding the Criminal Code and Elder Abuse, in hopes of providing meaningful consultation to the government.

I am happy to report that our Section has received funding to outreach to members! These member engagement events include reaching law students through lunch and learn events, an essay contest, and virtual networking events.

We have a new volunteer Communication Officer position on the Executive, which Brett Book has agreed to take on for 2023-2024. Congratulations! In this position Brett will ensure that our Section is present on social media to promote our initiatives. Follow us on LinkedIn to stay up-to-date! We welcome submissions for member articles. If there are any initiatives you would like to highlight, please do not hesitate to reach out.

ESSAY CONTEST WINNER

The Section is pleased to announce Sara Haider as the winner of the CBA Elder Law Section Essay Contest for the paper “Silent Epidemic: The Alarming Rise of Elder Abuse and Urgent Need for Estate Law Reform”. Sara is a recent graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School.

CALL FOR MEMBERS-AT-LARGE

We still have Members-at-Large positions available on the Executive Committee for 2023-2024. If you are interested in getting involved with the Section or learning more about the role, please contact us.

Sincerely,

Amy MacAlpine
