Welcome to the 2023-2024 Section. I’m honoured to be your Chair for the upcoming term and chapter.
As a National Section, it’s important for us to establish the personal connections and relationships that can be difficult to foster virtually. I’m thrilled to be back in person at our biennial conference and encourage everyone to join us in Vancouver, October 12 – 14, for what is shaping up to be a wonderful few days. We’ll spend the time learning, mingling, and getting to know each other. To that end, we are only as strong as our volunteers; so, I encourage everyone to get involved in any way that you can.
In addition to the conference, we have an exciting slate of CPD this fall and programs in the winter and spring of 2024. We welcome submissions for member articles. If there are any initiatives you would like to highlight to our Executive or the Section, please do not hesitate to reach out.
To provide insight and help educate our colleagues, we continue to monitor and track legislative changes in prompt payment, alternative dispute resolution, the evolution of contracts and procurement types, and all other issues facing the construction sector. Construction procurement and contracts in Canada are becoming increasingly complex and our Section provides a great forum for discussion.
Lastly, I want to thank Marcia Oliver for all her hard work and dedication as the outgoing Chair. It has not been easy guiding the group through a turbulent few years and she did so with grace and endless commitment to the CBA, our Section, and the executive.
I’d like to close with a sentiment from a past Chair; what brought me to CBA and the reason I continue to get involved year-after-year, is the opportunity to build relationships with the leading lawyers in our industry from across the country. I’ve made some wonderful friends over the years that I call upon for guidance and expertise and I encourage you to do the same.
Whether you’re a returning member or recently joined us, welcome to our Section. I look forward to working with each and every one of you over the coming year.
UPCOMING CPD!
Choosing an Arbitral Procedure that suits YOUR case – September 18, 2023
One touted benefit of arbitration is the flexibility of process, yet often we see stock-standard procedural orders and timetables rolled out from case to case. The panel will consider whether (and how) parties and arbitrators can consider a more flexible, tailored approach to maximize procedural efficiency, depending on the circumstances of each case.
