Happy New Year! I send you and your loved ones best wishes for this holiday season.
It was a very busy fall for the CBA Competition Law Section. The highlight was no doubt the outstanding Fall Conference, chaired by Elisa Kearney of Davies. The program was rich with various topics and speakers from across Canada and the globe. As always it is a privilege to have the continued strong participation and support of the Competition Bureau. Perhaps the most memorable event at the conference was the uniquely Canadian evening held at the spectacular dining hall at the National Arts Centre, with entertainment provided by Toronto’s Second City. Thank you again to Elisa and Marianne Pelletier from the CBA, as well to all of our sponsors and speakers for making the conference such a success.
SPRING CONFERENCE
While we may now be in the depth of Winter, it is never too early to think about Spring. On that note, I can confirm that registration is now open for the 2019 Competition Law Spring Conference (taking place at the Toronto Board of Trade on Tuesday, May 7, 2019). This year’s program promises to be very interesting and enlightening and is chaired by Chris Naudie of Oslers. We will be tackling some core topics as well as the most cutting-edge antitrust thinking.
COMMITTEES & CLE
The Fall calendar also featured many excellent CLE programs, which I hope you were able to attend. Many more interesting and varied CLE programs will be hosted by our 12 active committees over the coming months. Please visit the committee pages anytime and feel free to get in touch with the committee leadership to see how you can get involved in upcoming CLE sessions. We’d also love to hear any programming ideas or needs you may have. For more information and updates on programs and events, please visit the Section’s webpage.
CCLR
The Canadian Competition Law Review (CCLR) is another great way to get involved or brush up on the latest legal or economic thinking. CCLR is a peer-edited review that is published twice a year and is available free online. Papers can be submitted to cancomplrev@cba.org. The submission deadline for the fall edition is March 15, 2019. As an added incentive, the Bill Miller Memorial Award is presented annually for up to two of the best articles published in CCLR.
JAMES H. BOCKING MEMORIAL AWARD
The Section’s James H. Bocking Memorial Award is presented annually to recognize the best scholarly paper on a subject relating directly to Canadian competition law or policy.
The Award offers an opportunity to full-time students or early career lawyers (within three years of their call to the Bar) who are interested in competition law to expand their knowledge of Canadian competition law and policy, and to build their profile within the Canadian competition law bar.
The award consists of a monetary prize of $2,500, plus complimentary registration, travel and accommodation (as needed) to attend the Section's annual spring conference.
Submit a paper for consideration by February 28, 2019.
I hope you will all continue to be active and engaged members of our Section and I look forward to seeing all of you at our many events this year.
Best regards,
Oliver Borgers,
McCarthy Tétrault LLP
Chair, CBA Competition Law Section 2018-19
