In August 2016, the Competition Bureau lost a bright young officer, Michael Padbury. Michael was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, graduating from the University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Science in Economics with great distinction. He earned the highest GPA, receiving the Board of Governors Medal in Economics. He continued his education at the University of Western Ontario, pursuing his Masters and Ph.D. in Economics. He received the Joseph Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship, which he declined to instead pursue a career as a Competition Law Officer with the Competition Bureau in 2013.
With his strong economics background, Michael was a valued member of the Mergers and Monopolistic Practices Branch of the Bureau. He was also always ready with a smile, joke, prank or gift and charmed everyone with his playful nature and natural curiosity about a wide variety of subjects. In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Michael was a loving and devoted partner and father to his fiancée Oanh (Tally) Do and his young son Benjamin. His intellect, generosity, enthusiasm and infectious good humour will be remembered and greatly missed by his Bureau colleagues, friends and family.
In Michael’s memory, a trust fund for Benjamin Padbury has been established by his family. If you so desire, donations to support the fund can be made with cheques payable to Oanh Do. Please forward your cheque to a member of the Competition Law Section Executive.
Further information about Michael’s life is available in his obituary which can be found at http://familiesfirst.net/tribute/details/10398/Michael-Padbury/obituary.html.
