MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
I’m Laura James, your chair for the CBA National Business Law Section for 2024-2025. I am an associate in the Vancouver office of Bennett Jones. I focus primarily on mergers and acquisitions, private, and non-profit matters, but also work on general corporate and commercial matters.
I’m excited to chair the National Business Law Section this year. I first got involved in the Business Law Section as a Member-at-Large as a more junior lawyer. Being new to the profession at the time, I wanted to be involved in the broader profession and found joining the Section as a great way to contribute!
As a Section, we are excited to be working towards a variety of goals and initiatives to improve the impact and reach of the National Section. We hope that you will want to get involved with these. We are currently working towards hosting virtual and in-person networking events designed to connect local and national communities, so keep an eye out for announcements about events and opportunities in the coming months! Practicing law is challenging; it is important for us as business lawyers to have a professional community to reach out to for support and guidance.
Finally, we want to hear from you! We want to make sure that we are providing value to our Section members. Please complete the survey below to tell us what it is you are looking for and what you hope to get out of being a Section member. This will help us align our plans with your expectations. You can find the survey here.

MEMBER ARTICLES
We are always looking for content to share with our members and the wider CBA community. If you have any articles, blog posts, newsletters, etc. that you would like to share with a wider audience, please feel free to share them with our Communications Chair, Jacob Kojfman. You can use already existing material, subject to any exclusivity or other copyright issues.
MEMBER-AT-LARGE AVAILABILITY
One of the best ways to contribute to the Section is to join the executive as a Member-at-Large. We currently have one opening. Preference will be given to candidates not from Ontario and BC as our executive is very well represented by those two provinces. The CBA provides value to its members when members are actively involved. Being a Member-at-Large is a great way to contribute to the profession, expand your professional network in a meaningful way, and develop skills you may not be able to in your day-to-day practice.

This Section has a LinkedIn page! Please join us in using it to share information, repost articles, and other content relevant to the community. It is also a great way to connect with other section members across the country.
