As we celebrate a New Year, we are also welcoming Patricia Harper as acting Chair, effective March 1, 2024. Patricia has been an active member of the Executive for many years and has served in many different capacities including as a member of the Paul Smith Memorial Award jury. Patricia has been a cheerful and faithful presence on the Executive, and we are delighted to welcome her as acting Chair for the remainder of 2023-2024.
The Executive would like to thank Sara Hanson, who has just started maternity leave and will step back in her role as Chair. Sara did an excellent and admirable job leading the Section, including overseeing and ensuring the success of the recent CBA Administrative Law and Labour and Employment Law Conference. Congratulations on your new little one, Sara, and know that you are missed already!
It’s hard to believe another conference has come and gone, but what an experience! The theme of our most recent conference was Review of Recent Trends and Emerging Issues in Administrative, Labour & Employment Law. Thank you to all who joined us in Ottawa, and thank you to the Section and Executive members, presenters, and panelists who made this Conference such a success!
THE PAUL SMITH MEMORIAL AWARD
Our Section is excited to launch our annual Student Essay Contest! Please share our essay contest with students or law professors in your life, so that we can spread the news far and wide. We received few submissions last year, so we are hoping to increase the exposure of the contest. We know that there are law students out there who will benefit from this excellent opportunity!
If you are interested in reviewing submissions and sitting on the award jury, please contact us. We are always looking for new jury members, particularly those who are bilingual!
The submission deadline for this year’s contest is May 2, 2024. Details on the contest criteria and eligibility are available.
LASKIN MOOT – CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
The Laskin Moot will be taking place on February 29 – March 2, 2024 at the University of Calgary. This is a great opportunity to draw on your expertise, mentor students who are eager to learn, and sow into the lives of Canada’s future lawyers. If you are interested in volunteering to help coach one of the teams, please let us know!
