Job Summary

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Law and supporting the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies, Professional Programs and Innovation, the Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Programs is part of the Faculty of Law’s Executive Management team. Committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and indigenization, the Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Programs provides strategic and operational leadership through the development and implementation of short and long-term plans to ensure that the Faculty of Law continues to build on its reputation for excellence in the delivery of graduate legal education and professional programs. The Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Programs also demonstrates an entrepreneurial mindset, including creativity and resourcefulness, required for innovation within existing programs and developing new programs that meet the needs of the evolving legal profession and related markets.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the Dean and the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies, Professional Programs and Innovation, develop and execute the strategic vision for graduate legal education (LL.M. and Ph.D.) programs and new professional programs that fosters an environment of academic excellence and innovation.
  • Ensure the highest standards of graduate education by supporting curriculum development, faculty engagement, and student academic support services.
  • Lead the recruitment and admission processes for the graduate programs, working in collaboration with program leads and the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs, as applicable. Direct the development and analysis of statistical and financial information to support and enhance these processes.
  • Lead and manage change initiatives to enhance student experience, including the adoption of new technologies, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Working closely with the Faculty’s Executive Director, Finance and Administration, oversee the financial planning functions of the graduate programs including budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Promote a culture of inclusion and diversity and a sense of service in support of the University’s mission.
  • Oversee a team of education development and instructional design professionals to operationalize, implement, and execute the Faculty of Law’s strategic vision and goals for online, in-person and blended learning.
  • Lead business development activities to identify, design, and implement new and innovative professional programming such as certificate programs and micro credentials that meet the evolving needs of the legal profession and related markets. Ensure revenue growth targets are met and, when possible, exceeded.
  • Foster an innovative and creative approach to program development that encourages collaboration, flexibility, and responsiveness. Stay abreast of technological and pedagogical developments, and /or relevant legislation that will assist with student enrolment and engagement.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to support the smooth operation and continuous improvement of graduate and professional programs. Ensure compliance with university policies, accreditation standards, and legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, alumni, university administration, and external partners to promote, support, and assess graduate and professional programs and provide leadership to facilitate decision making about potential new collaborations.
  • Oversee the marketing strategy and promotion activities of graduate and professional programs developed in conjunction with the Faculty’s Marketing and Communications resources.
  • Plan, prioritize and manage the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance and coaching. Identify the need for staff resources, participate on staffing committees, and make effective recommendations regarding employee selection.
  • Manage performance by establishing performance standards, reviewing and evaluating performance and conducting formal performance reviews on an ongoing basis.
  • Assess staff training and development needs and ensure that employees receive training required to improve and sustain successful performance.
  • Investigate, address, and resolve employee/labour relations issues, including disciplinary matters. Make decisions or effective recommendations on matters involving possible discipline, discharge and probationary termination.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • University graduate level degree in legal studies, business, education, or policy development. A Juris Doctor (JD) degree is considered an asset.
  • Ten years of related progressively responsible professional experience
  • Demonstrated success in developing, leading, and motivating employees and diverse teams to create and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Experience in strategic planning, policy development, data analysis, report writing, and change management.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including excellent organizational and writing skills, with a proven ability to conceptualize and manage a project through to successful completion.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively. Ability to adapt content, tone, medium and style to audiences to be inclusive.
  • Proven record of business development and relationship building with the ability to work with a wide range of constituents and interest groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment and contribution to fostering and advancing I-EDIAA.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting/budgeting and solid financial acumen.
  • Knowledge and understanding of an academic environment, working with students and overseeing academic and professional programs is considered an asset.
  • Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Understanding of marketing and recruitment practices to promote and continue to attract a high caliber and diverse pool of students and program participants.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to use data for analytical purposes, as well as a demonstrated proficiency to learn new systems and software.

Decision Making:

  • Contribute to the development, leadership, and implementation of the Faculty of Law’s strategic vision to advance key priorities.
  • Make decisions on strategy, and recommend and implement changes to policy and processes or introduce new policies, processes or technology, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the graduate and professional programs.
  • Evaluate and determine appropriate programs and determine how to best implement new programs and initiatives and improve upon existing programs. Determine when to collaborate with members of the Faculty and other constituents to leverage their expertise to support and promote program development and refinement.
  • Determine appropriate advice, support, and guidance required to resolve issues concerning a wide variety of complex matters.
  • Assess and decide on the most impactful positioning, tone, and content for communications, reports, and proposals to various audiences related to graduate and professional programs.
  • Allocate resources and evaluate competing priorities when planning programming and set goals by identifying the significance, benefits, and risks of available alternatives.
  • Makes budget allocation decisions on discretionary budget items including funding decisions on a variety of graduate student funding requests.
  • Exercise judgement in determining when to involve the Dean, Associate Dean, Graduate Studies, Professional Programs and Innovation, and other members of the Executive Management team on issues that require decisions, and when to make decisions and take action independently.
  • Supervise and co-ordinate staff. Decide how to delegate work in order to maximize equity, capacity, productivity and skill development.
  • Evaluate job candidates and make effective recommendations on suitable hires.
  • Make decisions and/or effective recommendations regarding transfers and promotions of staff.
  • Evaluate employee performance and decide on appropriate training or coaching to address lack of proficiency in carrying out responsibilities, or remedial action for staff disciplinary situations.
  • Assess investigation outcomes of grievances and make effective recommendations on appropriate course of action or next steps on grievances.
  • Make effective recommendations on level of discipline up to discharge and probationary termination.
