The Canadian Bar Association is extremely saddened by the passing of Robert McKercher, K.C. on December 15, 2024. He served the Canadian legal profession and our Association well during his long career.
Robert McKercher, K.C. was the 55th President of the Canadian Bar Association, from 1983-1984. A CBA member since 1954, he also served as President of the Saskatchewan Branch from 1966-1968 and was a member of the National Judiciary Committee.
He did post-graduate legal studies in Toronto under Bora Laskin, later Chief Justice of Canada. He appeared in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Saskatchewan Provincial Court Judges Association in the 1997 case that led to the establishment of independent commissions to review judicial compensation.
One of his priorities as CBA President was building a strong national association, known for its determination to act as a cohesive force uniting all members in pursuit of their common interests and aspirations. In 1997, he was honoured with the CBA Saskatchewan Distinguished Service Award, reflecting his outstanding commitment to advancing the legal profession and his tireless support for the values and mission of the CBA. He was also deeply committed to legal education and youth engagement.
On behalf of the entire CBA, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Margaret (Peggy), his family, his friends, his colleagues and to all others whose lives he touched.
