The Canadian Bar Association welcomes the announcement that its nominee, Bianca Kratt, K.C., has been appointed to the Independent Advisory Board for Supreme Court of Canada Judicial Appointments.
Bianca Kratt, K.C. is currently a partner at Parlee McLaws LLP. She is a former president of the Canadian Bar Association – Alberta Branch, an Executive Member of this Branch since 2019. She also chaired the Association of French Speaking Lawyers of Alberta (AJEFA) from 2016 to 2018. Originally from Quebec, she is a bilingual lawyer and a member of the Huron-Wendat First Nation.
The CBA has called for the government to appoint more Black, Indigenous and People of Colour to bench, and to the judicial advisory committees that make recommendations for those appointments. Naming Bianca Kratt, K.C. to the board that advises government on appointments to the country’s highest court is an important step toward the objective of making the judiciary more representative of the people it serves and furthers the journey to reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and the rest of Canada.
