The Canadian Bar Association is pleased with the announcement that the Hon. Michelle O’Bonsawin has been nominated to the Supreme Court of Canada, to fill the Ontario seat currently held by Justice Michael J. Moldaver, who retires on September 1.
Justice O’Bonsawin has been a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa since 2017. She is an Abenaki member of the Odanak First Nation and a bilingual Franco-Ontarian.
The CBA is thrilled that our calls for the appointment of an Indigenous person to the Supreme Court of Canada have been answered. We believe that Justice O’Bonsawin will be a great asset to the Supreme Court of Canada, and we look forward to working with her.
The CBA congratulates the Independent Advisory Board for Supreme Court of Canada Judicial Appointments and its nominee on the Advisory Board, Charlene Theodore, for its excellent work.
