The President of the Canadian Bar Association, Bradley D. Regehr, and the president of the New Brunswick Branch of the CBA, Lauren A. Cicin, mourn the passing of the Honourable Judith Keating, Q.C.
Senator Keating was a lawyer and constitutional expert, and a long-time CBA member who devoted her considerable energy to the promotion of language equality, Indigenous issues and the just treatment of women in the legal profession. She was awarded the Muriel Corkery-Ryan Q.C. Award by the CBA-NB in 2015 to recognize her outstanding work in the profession.
Prior to her appointment to the Senate she served in the New Brunswick government including as the first woman Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the province. CBA-NB members will remember her frequent contributions to the public discourse including, most recently, how eloquently she spoke on systemic racism in the justice system during the 2021 CBA-NB Midwinter conference. From 2010 until 2020, she also served as editor The Solicitor’s Journal for CBA-NB.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Senator Keating.
