The Canadian Bar Association is deeply concerned with the Guatemalan government’s decision to oust the UN backed Commission Against Impunity. It is an attack on the rule of law and a major blow to democracy in Guatemala.
There is no question that respect for the rule of law is both a fundamental characteristic of a just society, and a condition that enables nations to achieve other fundamental development goals. This decision is a major step backward for democracy in Guatemala and of grave concern for those who have worked for years to advance the independence of the judiciary, human rights and fight corruption.
The CBA supports the Government of Canada in urging the Guatemalan government to respect its international obligations and allow the International Commission Against Impunity to continue its valuable work.
