OTTAWA – The Canadian Bar Association welcomes the nomination of Sheilah L. Martin of Alberta to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Sheilah Martin is well known for her focus on Indigenous issues and advancing equality and justice for all in Canada. Her knowledge of the three legal systems in Canada will benefit the highest court.
A longtime CBA volunteer and leader in the CBA Judges Section, Martin has frequently contributed her expertise and insights on ethics, human rights, advocacy skills, equality and the role of the judiciary.
The CBA is pleased that Martin’s nomination maintains the tradition of regional representation, enhances the bilingual capacity of the court and respects the need for diversity on the court.
Martin’s timely nomination means that the SCC will continue to function at its full complement following the retirement of Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin on December 15.
