Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin and federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould headline the Canadian Bar Association’s (CBA) 2016 legal conference, Aug. 11-14 in Ottawa.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Chief Justice will address CBA Council, the Association’s governing body, on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 9:30 am. Immediately following her remarks, she will be available for a media Q & A.
  • Throughout the day on Aug. 11, CBA Council will debate policy resolutions on criminal justice, end-of-life issues, legal aid, and judicial appointments, among others.
  • On Friday, Aug. 12 at 8:15 am, federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould will deliver the keynote address at the conference’s opening plenary.
  • On Friday, Aug. 12 at 3:15 pm, the CBA is hosting an event called The Pitch: Where startups state their case. It’s the first-ever legal innovation startup competition hosted by the CBA and LegalX (at MaRS Discovery District in Toronto). Five finalists have been invited to give a short presentation and answer questions in front of a live audience from the legal and startup industries – as well as potential partners and investors.
  • On Saturday, Aug. 13 at noon, Harley Finkelstein and Joe Frasca of Shopify, one of Canada’s fastest growing, multi-billion dollar companies, will describe how Shopify maintains its legal integrity in its self-proclaimed “get sh*t done” environment.
  • Breakout sessions take place on Friday, Aug. 12 and Saturday, Aug. 13. The programs are clustered around the themes of building a better profession, building a better practice and building a better person.
  • On Sunday, Aug. 14, at 10:45 am, Dealing With Scandals features a conversation with crisis management expert Judy Smith, the lawyer who inspired the hit TV series Scandal, and knows, better than most, that public opinion can make or break a client’s reputation.
