OTTAWA – The Canadian Bar Association’s (CBA) National magazine, in collaboration with CBA Member Services and Young Lawyers-CBA, is hosting its first roundtable in the series Inside the Bar at Dalhousie’s Schulich School of Law on March 19, from 12 to 2 p.m. in Room 105, Weldon Building.
Called Preparing for Practice, the roundtable offers students the opportunity to hear experienced lawyers from a variety of practice areas share their views on how well law school prepares future lawyers for the real world. Among the questions they’ll consider:
- Do students get enough practical training at law school?
- Does the current curriculum adequately prepare them for the changing legal marketplace?
- Do the recent changes in articling requirements in Ontario highlight a need to rethink legal education?
Panelists include Robert Currie, associate professor, Schulich School of Law; Christine Doucet, partner, McGinty Doucet Walker; Matthew Fraser, Hood Fraser Law; James MacNeil, managing partner, Boyne Clarke; and Heather Oke, Nova Scotia Department of Justice. The moderator is James Rossiter, legal counsel, Parks Canada.
The roundtable is open to accredited media. Please contact Hannah Bernstein for accreditation. Further details are available online. A video of the roundtable will be posted online, and an edited version of the program will be published in the Law Student edition of National magazine in September.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to supporting the rule of law, improvements in the law, and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
