OTTAWA – The Canadian Bar Association welcomes the federal government’s announcement of the members of the Advisory Board for Quebec that will be charged with selecting candidates to fill the seat on the Supreme Court of Canada bench left vacant by the resignation of Justice Clément Gascon.

The Canadian Bar Association welcomes the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision to go hold occasional hearings outside Ottawa. The court announced on Monday that it would be hearing two cases, a criminal law appeal from Manitoba and a language rights appeal from British Columbia, this fall in Winnipeg.

Karine McLaren, a law professor from the Université de Moncton, and Scott Franks, an associate with Olthui Kleer Townshend LLP in Toronto, are the joint recipients of this year’s Viscount Bennett Award.

Jason Cooke, a partner with Burchells LLP in Halifax, is the Board member from Nova Scotia.

Most of us are conscious of the image we present when we travel, making sure our faces and our clothes are clean and tidy. If you’re a lawyer crossing the border with an electronic device that might have privileged client information on it, don’t forget to give that a scrub as well.
