Call for Research Volunteers in East Africa

The Supporting Inclusive Resource Development in East Africa (SIRD) project is looking to place three recent law graduates/junior lawyers in volunteer research positions for the month of September. The placements will occur in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The volunteer lawyers, under the guidance of the Project officers of Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Uganda Law Society (ULS) and the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), will support the implementation of a number of activities related to reaching the  SIRD objectives as above.

Specifically, the volunteer will assist the respective law society’s Project Manager and the Directors of Community Based Organisations/SIRD implementers, to:

  • Access and consult with community- based women's organizations/groups and identify key concerns and priorities (legal content, health and wellness, land rights, environment concerns)
  • Support the training held with women on regulatory frameworks and harms and the benefits of the extractive industry (environmental protection, local content, health and wellness)
  • Support women's groups/CBOs in advocacy actions and engaging with EIs related to legal/regulatory frameworks
  • Support training sessions held with identified pathway community champions (including paralegals) on referral pathway guided by Public Legal Education (PLE) materials
  • Support training with relevant leaders guided by gender sensitive PLE materials
  • Support the start up and intake of clients with the Legal Mobile Clinic
  • Support the dissemination of gender sensitive PLE and awareness raising programs via paralegals, law offices, CBOs/NGOs, media outlets (Radio, publications, drama, SMS campaigns, community consultations, etc.)

LOCATION & DURATION

Three researchers will be based in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda (one placement per country) for a period of four weeks. (Starting in September 2019)

QUALIFICATIONS

Volunteers should have one or more of the following desired qualifications:

  • Considerable experience working on legal issues related to the extractive sector
  • Good knowledge of international standards and best practices in the governance of natural resources (oil, gas and mining) for sustainable development
  • Experience in extractive sector regulation, aboriginal law, human rights, gender equality, environmental protection, international investment, community empowerment and/or corporate social responsibility
  • International development experience, especially in Africa
  • Experience developing training programs and delivering training
  • The above are considered assets and may not be necessary for all project activities
