The Sword & Scale Open Essay Competition was established by the CBA Military Law Section to promote and reward interest in military law topics by Canadian law school graduates, articling students, lawyers and academics.
PRIZE
The winner will receive:
- A cash prize of $250
- A speaking opportunity at (and complimentary registration to) the CBA Military Law Section PD conference
- Up to $500 to offset travel costs to the PD conference (if applicable)
- Publication of their paper on the Military Law Section webpage
CRITERIA AND ELIGIBILITY
The prize is presented for the best paper or article submitted on a subject related to Canadian military law, by an individual who meets the following eligibility criteria:
- Graduate of a Canadian law school
- Articling student
- Lawyer called to the bar in a Canadian jurisdiction
- Academic within a Canadian law school
FORMAT
Essays may be written in either English or French by one author only. All papers must be submitted in MS Word with 1-inch margins, double-spaced paragraphs, and 12pt Times New Roman font. Essays must be between 15 and 40 pages in length. This excludes the title page and bibliography. Notes may be footnotes or endnotes, and should be numbered consecutively throughout the text with superscript Arabic numbers.
SUBMISSION AND SELECTION PROCESS
Essays must be submitted by email to military.law@cba.org, with “Sword & Scale Open Essay Competition” as the subject line. Papers must be submitted with a completed application form. Authors should also supply an abstract (150 words max.) of their essay and a short biography, including the name of the law school attended, and/or the firm or institution in which they are currently practicing. The Executive Committee of the CBA Military Law Section will select a jury of three to five persons to evaluate essays submitted and to select the best scholarly essay.

Submissions must be received by March 20, 2017.
