Viscount Bennett Fellowship winner announced
The winner of the 2016 CBA Viscount Bennett Fellowship is Daniel Del Gobbo, a student in the S.J.D. program at the University of Toronto whose study area “falls at the intersections of alternative dispute resolution and feminist legal theory.”
Del Gobbo earned a Bachelor’s degree at Queen’s University, and a J.D. at Osgoode Hall. He worked as a litigator at two multinational law firms between his 2011 graduation and 2014, before returning to school – this time Harvard – for his LL.M., which he earned in 2015.
His project at the U of T has for a running hypothesis that “while law reformers routinely rely on arguments founded in one feminist discourse or another, it may be a mistake to assume that two legitimate views are not both strategically necessary to understand and resolve gendered and sexual conflicts, when each view is inadequate and incomplete at appreciating the various rights and interests on its own. My hope is that an ADR framework designed to accommodate this diversity will suggest more productive and viable alternatives for the benefit of both women and men.”
The Viscount Bennett Fellowship is a $50,000 award made possible by the 1929-30 CBA president, the Right Honourable Viscount Bennett, who established a trust fund to provide income to be used to encourage a high standard of legal education, training and ethics. The Fellowship is awarded every two years.
