The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, P.C., M.P.
Minister of International Trade
House of Commons
Ottawa ON, K1A 0A6
Dear Minister Sidhu,
On behalf of the Competition Law and Foreign Investment Review Section and the International Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), please accept our congratulations on your appointment as Canada’s Minister of International Trade. We look forward to working with you and your team as the government advances its trade agenda.
The CBA is a national association of more than 40,000 lawyers, notaries, academics and law students dedicated to improving the law and the administration of justice. Our Sections unite leading practitioners who navigate, daily, the intersection of law, business and public policy—expertise we hope will be helpful to your department in the months ahead.
Our Competition Law and Foreign Investment Review Section has long engaged with government on competition and foreign investment policy. These areas intersect directly with international trade in promoting Canada’s economic welfare, particularly amid heightened global economic turbulence. Our members would welcome opportunities to provide input on the competition and foreign investment issues that will arise across your portfolio.
Complementing that perspective, the International Law Section brings together practitioners and scholars across public and private international law. Members advise on the negotiation, implementation and dispute‑settlement provisions of Canada’s trade agreements, monitor developments before the WTO and other multilateral fora. The Section also tracks emerging issues such as digital‑trade disciplines, sustainable‑trade initiatives and the evolving architecture of global investment protection. We look forward to sharing our insights on these matters as your mandate takes shape.
Should it be helpful, we would be pleased to arrange a briefing or roundtable, at your convenience, to identify priority areas where CBA expertise can support your objectives. Please feel free to have your staff contact Noel Corriveau, Advocacy Lawyer at the CBA at ncorriveau@cba.org to coordinate next steps.
Yours sincerely,
