Legal Counsel

Legal Counsel Level 2: $121,030.00 - $156,960.00 annually;
Legal Counsel Level 3: $161,625.00 - $185,603.00 annually

The Attorney General is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. The Ministry of Attorney General is structured to carry out this mandate under the direction of the Attorney General, and the Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Ministry in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. LSB’s clients include all ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public agencies.

Duties of this position include working primarily on hearings before the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal and providing advice and legal opinions in the human rights context.  In addition, some labour/employment written and oral advocacy may be required.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or eligible for immediate membership, with at least six years of Call to the Bar
    • Legal Counsel Level 2:  6 to 11 years of call; and
    • Legal Counsel Level 3:  12+ years of call.
  • Experience conducting hearings before Courts or administrative tribunals.

Preference may be given to applicants with any of the following:

  • Experience practicing in the area of human rights and/or representing Government.
  • Experience conducting hearings before the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal, other administrative tribunals and/or disciplinary bodies. 
  • Experience in labour arbitration will be considered an asset.
