OBJET : Bénévoles recherchés – Introduction aux chartes dans les écoles secondaires

Nous sommes à la recherche d’avocat(e)s désireux(ses) de participer à une initiative visant à enseigner les principes des chartes des droits et libertés aux élèves de quatrième ou cinquième année du secondaire. Ce projet du Comité Citoyenneté et Chartes de l’Association du Barreau canadien, Division du Québec, en collaboration avec le Forum des juges canadiens, existe depuis maintenant quatorze ans et amène avocat(e)s et juges à travailler avec le corps enseignant afin d’initier nos jeunes concitoyen(ne)s à leurs droits et obligations fondamentaux au sein de la société.
Dans sa forme actuelle, le programme consiste en une série de quatre ou cinq cours et culmine par une simulation d’appel devant la Cour suprême du Canada. Ainsi, après avoir été initiés aux principes des chartes des droits par leur enseignant, les élèves rencontrent un(e) avocat(e) qui les assiste dans la préparation de l’appel d’un dossier simplifié qui reprend les enjeux d’un véritable litige judiciaire impliquant l’application des chartes. Un(e) juge de la Cour d’appel, de la Cour supérieure ou de la Cour du Québec se joint au groupe lors de l’audition de l’appel simulé.
Pour les avocat(e)s, l’expérience requiert généralement deux demi-journées de disponibilité, mais tou(te)s apprécient ce contact privilégié avec des adolescents et leurs enseignants. La gratitude manifestée par ceux-ci vaut le déplacement.
Cette année, le programme est offert dans les régions suivantes : Montréal, Laval, Laurentides, Lanaudière, Montérégie.

SUBJECT: Introduction to the Charters in High Schools – Volunteers Wanted
We are looking for lawyers wishing to participate in an initiative to teach the principles of the charters of rights and freedoms to Secondary IV or V students. This project of the Comité Citoyenneté et Chartes of the Canadian Bar Association-Quebec Branch, in cooperation with the Canadian Judges’ Forum, has been around for 14 years now and brings together lawyers and judges to work with teachers to introduce our young fellow citizens to their fundamental rights and obligations in society.
In its current form, the project consists of a series of four or five classes ending with a mock appeal before the Supreme Court of Canada. After learning about the principles of the charters of rights and freedoms with their teachers, students meet a lawyer who helps them prepare for the appeal of a simplified file which presents issues found in actual cases involving the application of the charters. A judge of the Court of Appeal, the Superior Court or the Court of Quebec joins the group during the hearing of the mock appeal.
For lawyers, the experience generally requires two half-days of their time, but they will enjoy this special interaction with teenagers and their teachers. The gratitude shown by them is well worth the effort.
This year, the program is offered in the following regions: Montreal, Laval, Laurentides, Lanaudière, Montérégie.
