FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Lawyers’ Assistance Program?

It is a program run by a committee of lawyers to provide lawyers, judges, law students and their family members with access to free and confidential one on one professional counselling service.

Are family members covered under the plan?

Yes, you, your spouse and dependents are covered by the plan. As an individual you are covered for 6 sessions with a professional counselor and as a family you are covered for a combined total of 10 sessions.

Will there be a fee for the counseling I receive?

No, all of the fees charged by the professional counselor are paid directly by LAP so there is absolutely no out of pocket cost.

Is the 1-888-315-2244 access line for emergencies only?

While the person answering the phone is trained in emergency intervention, the line is designed to refer you to a service provider (most often a Licensed Psychologist) in your area or region of choice.

What will happen when I call the line?

The person answering the phone will simply ask the nature of your problem and your area of choice for counseling services.  You will have to leave your name and a contact number so that the service provider can call you to make an appointment. You may also be offered the services of a peer volunteer.

Will anyone find out that I have called the line or used the service?

No, LAP is a confidential service and has taken many steps to protect and maintain your privacy.  The individual answering the Access line is an employee of a private psychology clinic who has signed a confidentiality agreement and has been trained in matters of confidentiality.  No names are provided to the LAP committee.

Why should I call the LAP?

LAP provides counseling to help with any family, personal or work-related concerns. Call because you want help in dealing with the things causing you or your loved ones distress. You should call if:

§    you are suffering from stress and anxiety
