  ne of the cornerstone events held in British Columbia during Law Week is the annual Barry Sullivan Law Cup public speaking contest. The competition is sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association British Columbia Branch (CBABC) and is open to students enrolled in grades 11-12 in British Columbia. The Law Cup is named in memory of Barry Sullivan in recognition of his contributions to both the legal and educational professions. The Law Cup is presented to the provincial winner of the competition.
The competition was held from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Thursday, April 16, 2009 in the Heritage Courtroom at the Vancouver Art Gallery, 750 Hornby Street in Vancouver, British Columbia. Students presented five minute speeches on topics that pertained to this year's theme "Public Confidence in the Justice System." The speakers were judged by a panel composed of The Honourable Madam Justice Laura Gerow of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, The Honourable Chief Justice Hugh Stansfield of the Provincial Court of British Columbia, Professor Elizabeth Edinger, University of British Columbia, Faculty of Law and Peter McKnight, Vancouver Sun columnist.
We wish to thank the speakers and judges for their participation in this event and Mr. Sullivan’s widow Ms. Dawn Waddell and the Sullivan family for their support of the Barry Sullivan Law Cup Public Speaking Contest.
