Justice System Reform Task Force In Place

KINGSTON, JAMAICA—Some 27 Jamaicans from diverse segments of the society have made the commitment to serve as members of the Jamaican Justice System Reform Task Force (JJSRTF). The Task Force was officially constituted during its first meeting held on November 9, 2006 at the University of the West Indies. Mona campus.

The members of the Task Force, represent citizens groups, individual members of the public, academia, court administrators, judges, magistrates, lawyers, prosecutors, police and the Ministries of Justice and National Security.

“The composition of the Task Force is intended to mirror the diversity of interests and opinions in the Jamaican population,” the Chairman, Prof. A. Barrington Chevannes, Director of the Center for Public Safety and Justice at the University of the West Indies, pointed out. He added that “It is a privilege to work with these exceptional individuals who are volunteering their time, knowledge and expertise as an ongoing demonstration of their dedication to improving the justice system and the lives of all Jamaicans.”

The Jamaican Justice System Reform, which is scheduled to be conducted over a nine-month period, will inquire into the state of the justice system on a comprehensive basis and develop strategies and mechanisms to facilitate the modernisation of the justice system so that it is better able to meet the current and future needs of Jamaicans. The Jamaican Justice System Reform is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Justice as part of the Jamaican Governments broader modernisation programme and is being supported by the Canadian Bar Association.

The Jamaican Justice System Reform Task Force will provide overall guidance and direction for the design and implementation of the Review. Through its membership the Task Force will ensure active engagement of all the justice system stakeholders, including the public, through the establishment of regional working groups and the organisation of public consultations, will encourage and facilitate the participation of all Jamaicans in the justice review and reform process.
